Lab Settings PDF Print E-mail

Lab Settings are a key feature of Photojunction Remix. They help ensure that the orders you send your lab are accurate and complete, and that the files comply with the lab's specifications.

You can access your installed Lab Settings files under Vendors in the File Menu, or download more by selecting Check For Updates from the Help menu (Photojunction menu on Mac OSX).

You can Add, Edit, Delete or Duplicate Lab Settings files, although you can't edit files that have been passworded and locked.

Where available, we strongly recommend that you use Settings authorised by your Lab rather than creating your own. Having said that, they are very simple to create provided you understand your Lab's requirements. Read on for more about the contents of Lab Settings files.

Lab Settings you create yourself

You can create Lab Settings yourself to suit any Lab or to ensure your files are ready for in-house printing. If you wish, you can base your file on Photojunction's own generic Lab Settings file called "Remix DIY Lab Settings" (see below).

You can specify, amongst other things:

  • Acceptable file formats and print resolutions (dpi).

  • Maximum print size.

  • Acceptable standard print sizes (where required).

  • Whether “non-standard” print sizes are acceptable.

  • Acceptable layout types (double layouts, single layouts and/or individual images).

  • Whether re-sizing canvases to standard sizes is acceptable.

You can enter these necessary details quickly and easily, based on published data from the Lab.
If you wish, you can password the Lab Settings that you create, lock them to prevent changes and distribute them to other users.

Remix DIY Lab Settings

As with the album resources, Remix DIY Lab Settings are designed to get you started if you don’t have a lab settings file for the lab you use. The master file distributed with Photojunction cannot be edited, but we suggest you duplicate and edit a copy for each lab you use.

Print Resolution (dpi)

Print size is determined by the number of pixels in the image file (height and width) divided by dpi (dots – ie pixels – per inch).

Different equipment requires different resolutions, and you should check the resolution(s) that your lab requires. The file includes a number of common resolutions. Select the one that's right for your lab or, if necessary, add a new resolution:

  • 72 dpi is screen resolution

  • 200 dpi is Durst Lambda low resolution

  • 250 dpi is Kodak LED and Durst Theta resolution

  • 300 dpi is Kodak and Fuji minilab resolution

  • 360 dpi is inkjet photo printer resolution

  • 400 dpi is Durst Lambda high res (recommended for text etc)

Maximum print size (mm)

The largest size your lab can print. Set in Remix DIY to 457.2x304.8mm (ie 18x12in). Check this value with your lab as well. Photojunction will warn you if you attempt to create exports that are too large for your lab to print.

Non-standard sizes acceptable

Many labs require that prints be a standard size. If you leave this set to “No”, Photojunction will change the canvas size of your high-res exports to match the smallest possible standard print size that your lab offers.

Acceptable file formats and layout types

Most labs require JPGs. However many photographers will export layouts as layered PSDs and save them as JPGs after editing them in Photoshop. If so, make sure you leave PSDs as an acceptable file type.

Photojunction can export files as single layouts, double layouts or (in matted albums) individual images. Double layouts include both the left and right sides of the page opening in the one file, which may create files that are too large for some labs to print.

Allow changing canvas to standard size

This is the opposite of the “Non-standard sizes acceptable” setting. Some labs disallow changing to standard sizes as not appropriate on their large-format printers.

Export to folders

If you “change canvas size to standard” when you export, you can save the files in folders by size.

Lab website

You can enter your lab’s website for easy reference if you wish.

Standard print sizes

Remix DIY ships with a number of common print sizes. If your lab works with standard sizes, as most do, it's very important to edit the list to comply with your lab’s requirements. If you don’t do so, and you select “change canvas size to standard” when you export, Photojunction will create print files that your lab can’t produce for you.
